VOL. 4, NO. 1
January/February 2001

Dear Fellow Roman Catholics:

I wish to take a brief moment to express my sincere gratitude to those who sent me Mass and Rosary cards during my recent illness. The most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most pleasing and efficacious prayer that may be offered to God, our Father. The Mass and the Holy Rosary to our Blessed Mother, are two of the most effective forms of petition that we humans have for the sanctification of our souls and physical healing. My family and I will not forget your kindness!

There is so much to write about! There is so much coming at us from all directions during this so-called 'information age' that our minds become as cluttered as a child's playroom or Fibber McGee and Molly's closet (for those over 39). All of us, without exception, are so busy trying to cope with our own little corner of the world that there is much that we do not see and, even worse, ignore. Why is this? Possibly our editorial will provide some food for thought.

We are including in this issue an article by Juan Rodriguez entitled From Reed to Rock. Juan is a young man engaged in active Youth Ministry in New York City. He also attends St. John's University where he is a student of Philosophy and Theology. Juan states that "We need much help in youth ministry as they are the future of our Church." He also states that, "We are being 'force-fed' by Protestant mentalities and being indoctrinated with foolish, liberal ideas." Juan Rodriguez acknowledges that " we are being neglected by many of our shepherds rather than being taught how to develop a strong, solid, Christian, Catholic tradition and foundation based on Truth." He is a 24-year old Roman Catholic and shows great promise. Hopefully, Juan will be a regular contributor to The Defender.

Many times, over the years, some of the truths of our faith have been questioned. We have even had great Saints and Doctors of the Church raise questions. In their zeal and love for Almighty God they always found the answers in Sacred Scripture and Tradition. Never did they dissent from these teachings and knowledge so gained. It is with this in mind that Fred Paschall has contributed his article on Question or Dissent.

Jim Fritz has written a Commentary concerning an article by the Catholic Medical Association entitled Homosexuality and Hope. This article deals mainly with the male situation although the same myths are debunked for the female, or lesbian, situation as well. Remember that this very real perversion is being fostered in our public schools, in part, by the National Education Association (NEA). Children, as early as the second grade, are being taught about subjects that will ruin a young mind and body and destroy their immortal soul. Do not let the NEA destroy your child; become involved!

Our article on a modern saint in this issue is about Blessed Josemaria Escriva. Born in Spain in 1902 he became a priest in 1925 and by Divine inspiration he founded Opus Dei in 1928. Opus Dei now has over 60,000 members and has provided a new way for the faithful to sanctify themselves through the practice of their ordinary work and in the fulfillment of their personal, family and social duties.
