VOL. 11, NO. 3
The Defenders of the Faith, Inc is a 501(c)3 organization and therefore we cannot endorse any candidates running for office; however, we can and must educate our readers as to our requirement to vote, how we should make our decision to vote and on the positions of the various candidates. This issue is a devoted to the most critical election in the history of the United States.
Our first article is not entitled Catholic Teaching as it is really a joint letter from Bishop Farrell of Dallas and Bishop Vann of Fort Worth, but it is a teaching document informing Catholics on the moral obligations to vote, the moral obligations to form consciences for faithful citizenship, and the serious moral consequences of voting for certain issues. The two bishops provide an excellent summary of the USCCB document “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”. Their letter dispels any confusion or misunderstanding concerning the much longer and sometimes obtuse USCCB document. As the bishops state, the decision a Catholic makes during this election affects not only the general peace and prosperity of society at large, but may also affect each individual’s salvation.
Following the bishops’ letter we have request from Father John Corapi to make a novena and pray a Rosary to Our Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election Day.
We have reprinted a public release from the National Right to Life Committee (NRTLC) published after the third political debate of the presidential candidates. This release is devoted to Senator Obama’s position on an issue described in the Bishops’ letter as an “Intrinsic evil”. This Intrinsic evil is abortion! Senator McCain’s position is not published in this issue, but let it be stated that the NRTLC endorses Senator McCain.
With this publication we have included a guide that details both candidates’ positions on key issues. This guide has been legally approved for distribution by 501(c)3 organizations. It is published by Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life. Father is also a consultant to Defenders of the Faith, Inc.
Our featured article is by a guest writer, May Ann Kreitzer, who is also president of Catholic Media Coalition and publisher of The Truth, a newsletter similar to The Defender. Mary Ann’s article, “Picking Pockets in the Pew-the CCHD Scandal” concerns the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) and its ties with ACORN (Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now). Mary Ann’s article predates, but predicts, the recent voter fraud that is now under investigation by the FBI. Concern for the CCHD goes back almost to its establishment by the USCCB in 1969. Several noted authors, including Paul Likoudis and Stephanie Block who are frequently cited in this article, have been reporting on CCHD for years. Your editor even did an investigation of CCHD several years ago using the ‘Freedom of Information Act’ and discovered CCHD had been making contributions to an abortion clinic. All of this information has been reported to the USCCB which responds with the usual answer, “We will investigate.” and nothing is accomplished. As Mary Ann suggests, when the ushers pass the basket on November 23rd faithful Catholics should drop in a note saying why they will never put a penny in the CCHD collection until it follows Catholic social justice teachings instead of serving as a conduit for left-wing liberal extortionists. Then write a check to a local charity that truly serves the poor.
