Good Citizenship

"Unless a man becomes the enemy of an evil, he will not only become its slave, but rather its champion. God Himself will not help us to ignore evil, but only to defy and to defeat it." - G.K. Chesterton

A great evil exists in our country and we must work harder to stop it. The evil is in our political parties, and its 'champions' are many of the clergy and members of our Catholic Church.

The USCCB:

As many of you know, the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Voter's Guide has been heavily slanted toward the Democratic Party. The reason for this is the heavy influence on so-called "Social Justice." Of course we are all in favor of Social Justice; however, we need to look at the total picture.

Suppose a candidate does not favor outlawing or further restricting the legal right to abortion, but favors a comprehensive set of social and economic policies (e.g., increased child tax credit, universal health care, increased minimum wage, greater bargaining power for workers on wages and benefits), is it logical to vote for that person?

Let's look at some of the numbers. According to Guttmacher there are just under 8.1 million children dying every year. The silent killers are poverty, hunger, easily preventable diseases and illnesses. However, there are 42 million children deliberately killed (aborted) every year. Does it make any sense to vote for a politician who favors social justice programs when at the same time s/he supports abortion? Where is the social justice for the 42 million? Without the Right to Life there is no social justice.

The USCCB is the champion of the evil of abortion because it is not the enemy of abortion, as per G. K. Chesterton.

Results of Social Justice Programs:

Social justice programs sound noble and they are; however, programs run by the government have miserable results. Look at Lyndon Johnson's fifty-year-old war on poverty. Since 1964, the Democrat party has, under the pretense of helping oppressed people lift themselves out of poverty, used this so-called war on poverty as a means of amassing billions of dollars, along with a huge bloc of obedient voters, for themselves. These con men accomplished this by convincing people they are victims of an unjust society, and only government can right this wrong. The problem is the alleged victims of this unjust society have become the victims and slaves of the government.

In an interesting and well-written article by Mike Holz, he emphasizes how for fifty years, these victims have willingly given up control of their lives to a government that makes their decisions for them - a government that has bribed them for this control with paltry housing and food subsidies, substandard medical care, lousy schools, and unsafe neighborhoods - a government that undermines morality and family values by rewarding single mothers with benefits that are sharply reduced when they marry - the government essentially becomes the husband and father to these single-parent families. What has resulted from this is a huge segment of society which is incapable of taking care of itself; a huge segment of society trapped on these government-sponsored plantations run by leftist politicians, and financed by taxpayers.

In fifty years, we've spent over 22 trillion dollars on this war with nothing to show for it. Taxpayers are footing a bill of over 900 billion dollars annually to fund over eighty welfare programs. Currently, about 100 million Americans receive some kind of financial aid from at least one of these programs. This breaks down to $9,000 per person and does not include Social Security and Medicare. There are 45 million Americans now on food stamps. There are now more Americans living below the poverty line than at any time in our history. Liberalism under the Democrat party has created an underclass of people who are trapped in ghetto hell-holes with all the crime, despair, and misery associated with them.

Assuming their original intentions were noble, you would think, after fifty years of abject failure, the liberal left would be re-thinking their strategy, but they are not. They refuse to change the welfare rules such as mandating work for food stamp recipients who are not disabled adults and do not have children. The states, such as North Carolina and Maine, who have initiated this and set time limits had a dramatic number of people entering the work force. Maine had an 80 percent drop in welfare to able bodied adults without children. So why are the Republicans not pushing work-force? Some are afraid they will be viewed as hard-hearted and even cruel. But getting people off of welfare into a productive job will not only reduce costs, but more importantly, it will rebuild broken lives and move people into the mainstream. There is despair in welfare and there is dignity in work.

Abortion:

One of the platforms of the Democratic Party is free access to abortion. They want even fewer restrictions than those presently in place. They are a major supporter of Planned Parenthood, who this year will celebrate their 100th anniversary of being in the birth control/baby killing business. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, opened the first birth control clinic in New York City in October 1916. Her primary goal was to reduce the number of blacks whom she considered useless. She thought she was liberating women from childbearing. What she actually accomplished was to chain women to promiscuous behavior, a reliance on birth control and a denial of their own natural fertility. Thanks to support from the Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood not only provides birth control, but chemicals which abort the unborn - as well as surgical abortion up to the time of the birth. In addition, it also provides strongly-biased sex education in public schools beginning with children as young as kindergarten.

A byproduct of all of this is the many negative effects of abortions on women including a high rate of mental problems, suicide, and medical issues such as breast cancer. The negative effect on society is tremendous including a lowering birthrate which will devastate a society. A separate article could be published on this terrible aspect alone.

The Supreme Court:

Although America's founders did not intend this to happen, the reality is the Supreme Court has become the most powerful institution of government other than the Presidency. We have a Supreme Court which does what it wants to do, regardless of what the Constitution or the law says. The Supreme Court makes its own laws. What is at stake in this election in November is not just the Presidency, but also the Supreme Court. The next President of the United States will likely make three or four Supreme Court appointments and set the direction of the Supreme Court for generations, ensuring many more attacks on religious liberty. The anti-Christian Left actually wants to go way beyond silencing you. They want to use government force to make you accept their views and reject your faith. They will do this through the Supreme Court.

In 1973, the Supreme Court found a "right to abortion" in the Constitution (where no such right exists) and instantly struck down anti-abortion laws in all 50 states - even though the "right to life" is in the Constitution.

In 2015, the Supreme Court invented a right to same-sex "marriage" in the Constitution. It is quickly becoming a criminal offense in America to express opposition to same-sex "marriage" and the homosexual political agenda.

Attack on Religious Liberty:

As a few examples of the attacks on our religious liberty, the Christian owners of Sweet Cakes bakery in Portland, Oregon, were ordered to pay $135,000 in damages to a gay couple for declining to participate in their same-sex wedding; the state of Texas ordered Jeannette Golden to take down her six-foot by twelve-foot sign of the Ten Commandments even though it was posted on her own property; the San Francisco Board of Supervisors threatened legal action against San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone if he did not remove the requirement that teachers in Catholic schools under his jurisdiction uphold Catholic moral teachings; two men were arrested simply for reading the Bible outside the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Helmet, California; rather than face additional "civil rights" and "hate crime" lawsuits from federal, state, and local governments, the Boy Scouts now allow openly homosexual Scout Masters; and The Mayor of Houston, Texas, as part of her campaign of intimidation against Christians, issued subpoenas to Houston priests and pastors demanding they turn over copies of their sermons to determine if they were opposing same-sex "marriage" or depicting homosexual conduct as sinful.

The Democratically passed Healthcare Mandate requires all Americans (including Catholic and pro-life Americans) to purchase health insurance that includes coverage for abortion and contraception. The Democratic Administration has forced the Little Sisters of the Poor, and many others, into a lawsuit because they refuse to purchase health insurance which includes coverage for abortion and contraception.

The anti-Christian Left actually wants to go way beyond silencing you.

They want to use government force to make you accept their views and reject your faith.

Principle of Double Effect:

The following is a statement by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, when he was still Cardinal Ratzinger: According to the principles of Catholic morality, an action can be considered licit whose object in limiting an evil insofar as is possible. Thus, when one intervenes in a situation judged evil in order to correct it for the better, and when the action is not evil in itself. Such an action should be considered not as a voluntary acceptance of the lesser evil but rather as the effective improvement of the existing situation, even though one remains aware that not all evil present is able to be eliminated for the moment."

We cannot keep voting for more and more evil.

What not to do?

Do not be influenced by the secular and leftist media. They are part of the problem.

Do not vote for a third party. If you do, you will be handing the opponent a free vote. You will not be effective and will be complicit in the continuation of the evil. As Cardinal Ratzinger stated, you are not effectively improving the situation. And as G. K. Chesterton said, you will be a companion of evil. If you take away a vote from the pro-life party you are giving it to the pro-abortion party.

The Defender motto on the back of our newsletter states a quote from Edmund Burke. It reads, "Evil will triumph only when good men do nothing." In an article by Wayne Greeson (www.padfield.com/1997/goodmen.html) he states:

"So much of the history of the struggle between good and evil can be explained by Edmund Burke's observation. Time and again those who profess to be good seem to clearly outnumber those who are evil, yet those who are evil seem to prevail far too often. Seldom is it the numbers that determine the outcome, but whether those who claim to be good men are willing to stand up and fight for what they know to be right. There are numerous examples of this sad and awful scenario being played out over and over again in the scriptures."

This is so true! Greeson goes on to quote numerous versus of the Bible showing how Jesus combatted evil. Check out his website!

What should you do?

What I cannot do, as spokesperson for a 501c3 organization, is to tell you who to vote for; however, I can inform you of the situation and ask you to vote accordingly.

As a good Christian, your participation in political life is required. You should be open to the truth, examine the facts and prayerfully reflect upon these facts.

You should also inform as many other Christians as possible of the responsibilities of voting and of voting properly.

Let us all pray over this very important election and let us vote according to our Christian Faith.Let us be the enemy of evil - not it's champion.
